When we see a Brighton, MA, residents for gum disease, we want to help protect their smiles from serious complications, many of which could lead to missing teeth. While there is no cure for gum disease, we have treatments to help control and successfully manage the disease. In today’s blog, let’s look at three options for treating gum disease.
Antibiotic Therapy
Periodontal disease develops when the gums become inflamed, often as a result of poor oral hygiene, plaque buildup, smoking and tobacco use, family history of the disease, or the presence of an inflammatory illness. The gums pull from the teeth, forming deep pockets for bacteria to infiltrate. Over time, the recession will grow more severe and unless treated, periodontitis can form, an advanced stage of the disease that actually causes tooth loss. In the early stages, we may use antibiotics to control inflammation and help reverse gingivitis or manage gum disease.
Scaling and Root Planing
To stop gingivitis or help manage periodontal disease to prevent periodontitis, we may offer a scaling and root planing. Also known as a deep cleaning, this is a great solution for those suffering from the early stages of the disease. Using an ultrasonic scaling device and hand instruments, our team will carefully remove all plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the surface of the teeth to control the disease and help prevent adult tooth loss. We will then smooth the root surfaces. The procedure can take one visit, or two to four, depending on the extent of your buildup. The procedure enables healthy gum tissue to attach to the teeth, reducing the depth of periodontal pockets and helping your smile stay healthy. Afterward, we may recommend routine cleanings every three to four months to control plaque buildup and inflammation.
Gum Surgery
What if a person comes to us with an advanced case of gum disease, such as periodontitis? To control the disease once more and help prevent adult tooth loss, our on-staff periodontist, Dr. Kondrat, may perform gum surgery to remove the diseased tissue, once more allowing healthy tissue to regenerate and reducing the severity of the disease. Afterward, routine care both at-home and in our office can help control the disease and protect overall oral health. If you have any questions about preventing periodontal disease, or controlling it with routine treatment options, please contact our team today.
