If you lose a tooth you actually have a few options for replacement. For example, we can place a dental bridge or a dental implant. Which one will best address your tooth loss? Does one offer advantages the other doesn’t?
Dental Bridge
Nearly everyone qualifies for a dental bridge, provided they have one to three missing teeth in a row. A bridge does just that, bridging the gap between two teeth. To do this, a set of artificial teeth is created with a dental crown attached to each end. The crowns are placed on natural teeth on each side of the gap, securing the replacements. On average, they last around 10 to 15 years before requiring adjustment or replacement. You will need to take steps to clean and maintain your new prosthesis.
Dental Implant
We can use these to replace a single lost tooth or secure a full prosthesis. Unlike bridges, which are held in place with crowns, an implant will be inserted directly into the jawbone. Over time the bone tissue will connect to the implant, securing it like a natural tooth. After the area heals the doctor will add an abutment, which is a post that holds a dental crown into place. In addition, we could place several in each arch to support a set of dentures or even a fixed bridge. On average, they can be expected to last for up to 25 years, possibly even longer. You will care for them the same way as your natural teeth, brushing and flossing daily.
Which One is For Me?
That depends on a number of factors. Most people qualify for bridges, but implants require enough jawbone tissue to support the new tooth. In addition, you need to have healthy gum tissue as periodontal disease can lead to implant failure. To see which is the best for your smile we will first meet with you and discuss your smile goals. Afterward, we will perform a thorough examination to assess the health of your smile and the extent of your tooth loss. From there, we can recommend the best option for restoring your smile to full function and health.
