Just because you have misalignment, doesn’t mean metal braces are the only way to achieve a straighter smile. In fact, your Brighton, MA, dentists actually offer a nearly-invisible solution that doesn’t use metal brackets or wires at all. In today’s blog, we’re going to look at the benefits of correcting uneven teeth with invisible Invisalign® aligners.

How Does Uneven Teeth Harm Our Smiles?

Obviously, uneven teeth have a negative impact on the appearance of our smile, and could lead to issues with our confidence. But did you know that the alignment of your teeth could also lead to complications for your oral health? For example, thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth is difficult with misalignment, as food particles could become trapped and out of reach for floss and toothbrush bristles. As a result, the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, as well as bad breath and teeth stains, increases. Poor alignment also places pressure on your jaw joints, which could mean a greater risk of issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), which are linked to jaw pain, headaches and migraines, and even damaged teeth.

Creating Custom Aligners

We start by examining your smile to assess the cause and severity of your misalignment. If you’re a candidate for Invisalign®, we then take detailed impressions and images of your smile, which enables us to design and craft a series of aligners. When complete, you will start your treatment. Being custom-made ensures the aligners provide optimal treatment, and that they fit comfortably. We create each one from a clear BPA-free plastic material, so they will be barely noticeable when worn.

The Treatment Process

Each day, you will wear a set of aligners for between 20 and 22 hours, depending on the dentist’s recommendation. Each set is worn for about two weeks before you upgrade to the next in the series. The total treatment time varies, and the severity of your alignment will impact this time. On average, people usually see optimal results after about a year. However, you need to wear them as prescribed to see these results! That doesn’t mean they can’t, and shouldn’t, be removed occasionally. We suggest taking them out before meals, or prior to brushing and flossing your teeth, so you have an easier time enjoying your meals. You also have a much easier time keeping your smile clean and healthy during treatment too!
