Have you started planning your resolutions for the New Year? If not, might we suggest adding your smile to your list! In today’s blog, your Brighton, MA, dentists have a few tips for keeping teeth bright and healthy throughout 2020, and preventing the onset of everything from cavities to dental infections.
Brushing and Flossing
You may brush and floss, but have you been doing so correctly? Did you know that each session should take no less than two minutes to ensure you’re properly cleaning every available surface of your teeth? We suggest brushing your teeth when you wake up and again before going to bed, and be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles, as this prevents inadvertent damage to enamel should you brush too hard. A toothpaste with fluoride is also recommended, as this helps strengthen your outer enamel.
Flossing is even more vital, especially when it comes to preventing gum disease. When we floss, we remove the bits of food trapped between food and along the gum line, the bits of food a toothbrush may miss. You should floss up and down each side of every tooth, dipping briefly below the gum line for a thorough clean. You need to do this at night, right before you go to bed.
See Us for Checkups and Cleanings!
When was the last time you stopped in for an exam and cleaning? A regular checkup every six months allows our team to monitor your smile throughout the year and identify possible problems in the earliest possible stages, before they threaten your smile’s health, comfort, and stability. The cleaning portion involves removing all plaque and tartar from your teeth, something brushing and flossing alone cannot do. This process promotes better breath, brighter teeth, and a reduced risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
Smile Healthy Diets
If you drink beverages high in sugars and acids, such as sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks, this could encourage the onset of tooth decay. In addition, many sodas contain dark pigments that could stain your teeth! When choosing a snack, be sure to opt for fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and cheeses, low-fat yogurt and sugar-free gums, as these don’t leave behind particles for bacteria to consume, keeping your smile healthy throughout the year! If you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your first checkup of 2020, then contact our team today.
