Do you have an ache in one or more of your teeth that just won’t go away? If so, this could be a problem that requires the attention of your Brighton, MA, dentists. In today’s blog we’re looking at the connection between tooth decay and toothaches, and discussing what people can do to protect their smiles. We’re also going to look at treating a cavity in one visit with a lifelike composite filling.
The Possible Causes of Your Toothache
While some aches could be short-lived and caused by sinus and allergy issues, or changes in air pressure, a persistent ache may be the result of a cavity. Tooth decay occurs when the outer enamel is weakened and eroded, or damaged in an injury, and harmful bacteria can reach the inner layers of dentin, which are sensitive and porous. Decay then forms and unless treated, will continue to grow and spread, increasing the severity of discomfort and the risks of infection as well! Factors behind decay include teeth grinding and injury that wears down enamel or cracks and chips a tooth, or poor oral hygiene, which coats the teeth in plaque and erodes the enamel.
Treatment With a Composite Filling
If you begin to experience pain in or around one or more of your teeth, then let us know right away. We will perform a detailed examination to identify the factors behind your discomfort. If we find a cavity, then we can remove the decay, clean the tooth, and apply a metal-free composite resin material. We then shape the tooth and cure the material in a single visit. The filling material can also be shaded to match the color of your tooth, so your restoration looks natural. If you have decay too severe for a filling, then we can perform a root canal or place a crown to return the tooth to optimal health and function.
Preventive Care
To limit the chances of cavities forming, we may suggest starting your day by brushing your teeth for two minutes using a toothpaste with fluoride. Before bed, do the same and also floss in between each of your teeth. Making time for a checkup and cleaning is also beneficial, as we can identify possible trouble spots in the early stages and also remove plaque to prevent enamel erosion. Try to cut back on sugary foods and drinks, especially since Halloween is almost here!
