toothache

Nearly everyone is susceptible to a toothache. They can be caused by a variety of factors, from sinus infections to injury. However, a cavity is the most common factor behind tooth pain. How do you avoid toothaches? By maintaining a healthy smile you can reduce your chances of developing oral discomfort.

Tips for Preventing Toothaches

  1. Brush Your Teeth Daily: Since a cavity is often the cause of discomfort, you should work to avoid decay. By brushing your teeth twice a day you remove the bacteria and stray food particles that can often lead to cavities. We recommend using a brush that has the ADA seal of approval on the packaging and soft bristles.
  2. Floss Thoroughly: When food becomes caught between teeth brushing alone may not remove. Then bacteria can break down the particles, coating the teeth in plaque and raising oral acidity in the process. By flossing every day before bed you remove particles and protect your smile from both gum disease and tooth decay.
  3. Undergo a Professional Cleaning: The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth cleaned twice a year. By doing so, you remove the plaque from your teeth that can lead to toothaches (as a result of decay) and gum disease. The process also leaves your breath fresher and your teeth brighter.
  4. Have the Dentist Exam Your Teeth: If you do develop a cavity, a checkup will allow the dentist to uncover this issue in the earliest stages. We can then treat the problem before more intensive and costly procedures are needed. Like a cleaning, you should have a checkup twice a year.
  5. Don’t Ignore Discomfort: If you notice sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or a toothache, don’t ignore the issue. Persistent discomfort can be a warning sign of tooth decay or infection.
