Did you know that by correcting your uneven teeth, you do far more than just improve overall esthetics? In fact, you also boost the health and function of your smile too, keeping serious complications at bay. In today’s blog, your Brighton, MA, dentists will discuss how we correct uneven smiles with our custom and barely noticeable Invisalign® aligners.
The Oral Health Issues of Uneven Smiles
When you have crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth, this allows food particles to become trapped between your teeth. Even if you brush and floss regularly, this could fail to remove them. They remain stuck in place for bacteria to consume. This elevates plaque buildup severity, and could make the risk of tooth decay and gum disease more likely. For others, the pressure on your bite balance and jaw joints due to misalignment could lead to TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). To maintain optimal oral health, you need to correct your uneven teeth!
Creating Invisalign® Aligners
While braces are a very effective means of correcting uneven smiles, many people prefer to take the Invisalign® route. Instead of using metal brackets and wires, this system actually employs a series of clear aligners that fit comfortably and remain barely visible throughout treatment. To create them, we first take detailed digital images and measurements of your smile. After we determine this is the best option for you, we use the information in a lab setting to design and craft a series of aligners. Each one is created from a clear and BPA-free plastic material. They will then be used to correct smiles, often in as little as one year.
Correcting Misalignment
Each set is worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day, over the course of a two-week period. After two weeks, you start using the next set in the series. Over time, this process shifts the teeth into optimal positions and corrects your misalignment. The aligners will fit comfortably and help you avoid gum and cheek irritation, and you can remove them before meals so you don’t have to avoid certain foods. Being removable also makes brushing and flossing your teeth much easier, so you can keep your smile healthy and clean with ease.
