When we have teeth that crowd, overlap, or sit crooked in our smiles, not only does the appearance of our smile suffer, but our overall oral health will as well. Correcting these issues with orthodontics means helping our Brighton, MA, patients enjoy healthier and more beautiful smiles. Instead of using metal braces, we often help our patients by prescribing Invisalign® aligners.
The Difference Between Braces and Aligners
Braces correct misalignment as adjustments are made to an arch wire, which is a thin piece of metal that connects brackets attached to the front of the teeth. Over time, this repositions the teeth and improves alignment. However, the orthodontics will be very visible, which few adults are excited to experience. Fortunately, we have a barely visible alternative. By taking detailed measurements and impressions of your teeth, we can create a series of aligners from a clear, BPA-free acrylic material. When a set is worn, they will be barely visible. Over time, the series of clear aligners will help you enjoy a more even and beautiful smile.
What to Expect Each Day
Each day you will need to wear a set for about 20 to 23 hours, depending on your dentist’s recommendations. About every two weeks, you will upgrade to a new set. Now, you should remove them before you eat, which means you won’t have to change your diet or worry about food becoming trapped in orthodontics. Also, you can take them out before you brush and floss, which helps you maintain optimal oral hygiene throughout the treatment process. As long as you wear them for the amount of time the dentist recommends, you may also remove them for special occasion, such as a date, job interview, or a graduation.
The Long-Term Benefits of Addressing Uneven Teeth
When you finally address your smile’s alignment, you gain much more than just an esthetically-pleasing smile. Having even teeth makes brushing and flossing easier, which helps reduce the overall risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Relieving the pressure on the jaw joints by addressing misalignment also lessens the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism. As your smile’s appearance improves, so does your overall oral health.
