With the holiday season starting up, many people will be preparing to attend events and functions with friends and co-workers. Of course, they will want to look their best and that includes their smile. In order to help our Brighton, MA, patients enjoy the festivities with a brighter smile, we offer treatment options to mask permanent discoloration!
Intrinsic Teeth Stains
Also known as permanent teeth stains, intrinsic discoloration forms below the tooth enamel instead of on the surface. They can be caused by a number of factors, such as exposure to tetracycline as a child, injury to the teeth, or fluorosis. Patients may find that store bought systems don’t remove these stains easily, if at all. Fortunately, we have cosmetic treatments to mask permanent discoloration and improve the smile’s appearance.
Dental Bonding and Porcelain Veneers
With dental bonding, we use the same material as our tooth-colored fillings. Composite resin contains no metal and can be shaded to match tooth structure. We may apply the material to the teeth and then cure it using a special light. The procedure allows our team to mask discoloration in a single visit.
Porcelain veneers are thin restorations that cover the front and sides of the teeth. Since porcelain mimics the translucent nature of tooth enamel and can be shaded, they provide a completely lifelike solution to a variety of cosmetic concerns. We place them to mask teeth stains and may even combine them with dental bonding to provide a cost-effective smile transformation.
Preventing Extrinsic Discoloration
While you can’t really take steps to prevent intrinsic discoloration, you can help reduce the severity of extrinsic teeth stains, which form on your smile’s surface. We suggest brushing twice daily, flossing before bed, cutting back on sugary foods and drinks (as well as beverages with dark pigments), and seeing us every six months for a dental cleaning.
