Our Brighton, MA, patients with misalignment often talk about how uneven teeth impact their appearance. However, misalignment also leads to issues with the health and function of your smile. Instead of metal braces, we can help with a series of clear and comfortable plastic aligners. Let’s answer a few common questions about Invisalign®.
Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign
Question: How do you create the aligners?
Answer: We will need to create detailed impressions, along with intraoral photos of the teeth, with intraoral cameras and digital x-rays. The images gathered will then be sent to a special lab, where experts will use them to create a series of aligners from a BPA-free plastic material. Each one will be custom-made for the patient’s smile according to the dentist’s exact specifications.
Question: What does the treatment process involve?
Answer: Each day, the patient wears a set of aligners for between 20 and 22 hours. Around every two weeks, if worn properly, the patient upgrades to the next set. The teeth will be gradually and gently moved to optimal positions, correcting misalignment.
Question: Can I remove them?
Answer: Yes! For example, you can remove them before you eat, which means you don’t need to avoid certain foods (which you would need to do with metal braces). Patients remove them before they brush and floss as well, ensuring the smile receives quality care during treatment. Finally, you can take them out prior to special occasions. However, just be sure you’re still wearing them for the amount of hours each day that the dentist recommends.
Question: How long will I need to wear them?
Answer: Total treatment time varies, depending on the cause and extent of misalignment, as well as the patient’s age. However, treatment typically takes around a year for adults and up to 18 months for teens and young adults.
