We can lose teeth for a number of reasons, from injury to poor oral hygiene or even the advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis. When gaps appear in our smiles, our oral health and quality of life can suffer. Fortunately, we can use advanced dental implants to provide secure and lifelike replacements for missing teeth.
The Heath Risks of Missing Teeth
When a gap appears in your smile, the pressure on your jaw joints can increase the risk of both TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). In addition, adjacent teeth may drift from position, making misalignment more likely. You may also encounter problems eating or speaking clearly if you lose multiple teeth. Finally, patients with gaps in their smiles often feel self-conscious and may avoid social interactions, leading to a poor quality of life.
Placing Your New Teeth
The process begins with the dentist choosing the optimal area for placement and an oral surgeon inserting the dental implant into the jawbone. Since the implant is made from a biocompatible material (titanium), it bonds with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. We then add an abutment, which holds a custom-made dental crown in place and completes your new tooth.
Qualifying for Implant Dentistry
We may need to address underlying health issues before proceeding with placement, such as infection or periodontitis. We also assess the strength of your jawbone to make sure there is enough tissue to support a new tooth. If you are not a viable candidate for this procedure, we can discuss other options for addressing your tooth loss. We will wok with you to help you enjoy a full and functional smile once again.
