Dental crowns are common treatments due to the wear and tear your teeth experience over their lifetime. From extreme temperatures to crushing pressure to 600 different types of bacteria, your teeth endure a lot. But sometimes they may break, chip, crack, or experience excessive stains that don’t respond to routine dental cleanings. This is where dental crowns can help.
What is a Dental Crown?
Imagine a small cap that fits over your tooth. That is a dental crown. It helps restore your tooth’s integrity and protect it from future damage. Some patients require full crowns, while others may need partial ones (known as inlays and onlays). The tooth’s location and the issue will help determine what type is needed. We prefer to use all-porcelain, custom-tinted crowns because they look and feel natural, especially for the front teeth. The back teeth usually require crowns made from porcelain-fused-to-metal or zirconia to support more stress from biting and chewing.
How Does the Treatment Work?
We will take a dental impression and place a temporary crown on the damaged tooth. A ceramist in our dental lab will create the crown using the impression and design specifications for accuracy and precision. When it is ready, we will permanently bond the crown onto your tooth during your next visit. The whole process usually takes about two weeks.
